Prof Elsabe P Kearsley
Prof Elsabe P Kearsley

Concrete Materials, Department of Civil Engineering, University of Pretoria, South Africa

Professor Elsabe Kearsley is a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Pretoria. She is registered as professional engineer with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) and a NRF rated researcher. During the last 30 years her research focused on reducing the environmental impact of the cement and concrete industry. This can be achieved through using recycled materials and waste streams from industrial processes in cement and concrete, reducing the volume of raw materials used by optimizing concrete mix compositions or improving assumptions made during the design and construction of concrete infrastructure. She has been supervising postgraduate research students and conducting not only experimental laboratory studies to determine the effect of different waste streams and mix compositions on concrete properties but also conducing Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of concrete infrastructure to determine the effect of environmental conditions on concrete behaviour over extended periods of time.

Prof Bamidele I O Dahunsi
Prof Bamidele I O Dahunsi

Department of Civil Engineering, University of Ibadan, Nigeria

Prof. Bamidele Ibukunolu Olugbemi Dahunsi obtained his first Degree from the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife while his Masters and Doctorate Degrees in Farm Structures and Environments were obtained at Nigeria’s premier University, the University of Ibadan. He served his mandatory oneyear national service with the 3 Armoured Base Workshop of the Nigerian Army, Jos, Plateau State where he designed a sugar cane juice extracting machine and the acha dehulling machine.

He started his working career at Femagric Projects Limited, Lagos where he rose to the position of Projects Coordinator, supervising several mega-projects including the 25,000 metric tonnes strategic grains reserve complex for Oyo state and the borehole-fed irrigation system for Nigeria’s Agricultural Research Institute farms. He joined the service of the University of Ibadan in 1999 as a Lecturer grade 2 and rose through the ranks to the Professorship grade. He has supervised over 100 students at undergraduate level, about 85 at Masters level, 2 at M.Phil and 24 completed and several on-going Ph.Ds. He was the coordinator of the Department of Civil Engineering between April and November, 2004, the Acting Head of Department between May 2010 and April 2012 and Head of Department of Civil Engineering, University of Ibadan between August 2020 and July 2024. He is at present the Director of Physical Planning and Project Management at the University of Ibadan..

Prof. Dahunsi had his Postdoctoral training at the Central Building Research Institute in Roorkee, India under the TWAS/CSIR fellowship. He also won a MacArthur/University of Ibadan Fellowship for overseas training, which he utilised at the Modified Asphalt Research Centre of the University of Wisconsin, Madison in the United States of America.

Professor Dahunsi is a Professor of Structural and Materials Engineering with a major focus on the use of industrial and domestic waste materials in sustainable construction. He has carried research and supervised students in cement and concrete technology and has published extensively in this area. He looks forward to further collaborations with other researchers and expanding the frontier of knowledge in this area.
